In a program held in Ahmednagar in May 2023, CM Eknath Shinde announced that the name of Ahmednagar will be changed to Ahilya Nagar. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that in honour of Ahilyabai Holkar, the queen of the Maratha Empire, who was born in Chondi village of Ahmednagar district, the name of Ahmednagar will now be renamed Ahilya Nagar. Shinde made the announcement on the occasion of the 298th birth anniversary of the 18th-century queen.

Earlier in September 2023, a notification was issued changing the Aurangabad Revenue Division to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and the Osmanabad Revenue Division to the Dharashiv Revenue Division. The then CM Uddhav Thackeray took the decision to rename these divisions on June 29, 2022, a day before Eknath Shinde resigned, as rebelling against Uddhav’s leadership. This incident ultimately led to the fall of the Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena Mahavikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra.
