Telangana’s Kumbha Mela: Medaram Jatara Begins Today with Key Rituals

The significant commencement of the Medaram Sri Sammakka-Saralamma Jatara, renowned as Telangana’s Kumbh Mela, is set to begin today with the festival known as ‘Manda Melige’. This celebration, conducted in accordance with tribal culture and traditions, will take place from this morning until the early hours of tomorrow. The festivities will be held at the Sammakka deity’s temple in Medaram, the Saralamma temple in Kannepalli, and the temples of Pagididda Raju and Govinda Raju in the villages of Ponugundla and Kondai. The grand Medaram Jatara will commence on February 21, exactly one week after the start of the ‘Manda Melige’ festival.

Today, on the occasion of the ‘Manda Melige’ festival, the priests of Sammakka and Saralamma will perform special rituals. The tribal people will perform rituals at the temples of Sammakka in Medaram, Saralamma in Kannepalli, Pagididda Raju in Ponugundla, and Govinda Raju in Kondai. At the temples of Sammakka, Saralamma, Pagididda Raju, and Govindaraju, rangolis are drawn with natural soil. Additionally, the weapons, anklets, knives, vermilion containers, and other ritual items used by Sammakka and Saralamma are purified.

The newly formed Congress government is making all the necessary arrangements to grandly organize the Medaram Jatara, a significant tribal festival, from February 21 to 24. For the festival, special buses will be operated, and the Chief Minister has announced that women can travel for free on these buses. On the 23rd, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Governor Tamilisai, and President Murmu are also expected to visit the festival.
