AP Govt: YS Jagan’s Daring Move On Nagarjunasagar Dispute

AP Chief Minister YS Jagan made a key decision on the Krishna waters between AP and Telangana. As part of this, the police took over the right canal head regulator including 13 gates of Nagarjunasagar spillway in AP territory on the CM’s orders. Later, 2,300 cusecs of water was released to the right canal for drinking water needs. Meanwhile, CM Jagan has been waging an uncompromising struggle for the protection of the state’s rights over the Krishna waters for the past four and a half years.

15 TMCs for Sagar

Krishna and Godavari River Boards were formed during the bifurcation of the state. At that time it was decided that Srisailam reservoir should be taken care of by Andhra Pradesh and Nagarjunasagar by Telangana. But this decision is not implemented properly. Telangana State is maintaining the left power plant in Srisailam Reservoir. On the other hand, Andhra Pradesh officials are also not allowed to come. At the same time, 13 gates out of 26 gates in the Nagarjunasagar project are in AP. But Andhra Pradesh has always been demanding to bring the common reservoirs under the jurisdiction of the boards. Meanwhile, the Krishna Board allocated 30 TMCs to the state from the Srisailam project on October 6. As part of this, the Telangana government has shifted 15 TMC to Nagarjunasagar while generating electricity in the left bank centre and the Telangana government has neglected to release the remaining 15 TMC through the right canal of Sagar for the drinking water needs of Guntur, Palnadu, Bapatla and Prakasam districts.

Chandrababu’s Compromises State For His Case

In 2015, Telangana diverted water from Srisailam to Sagar. However, the Telangana authorities have ruled out the issue of releasing water for cultivation purposes under the right canal. With this, the police along with the officials reached Sagar to seize 13 gates and the right canal head regulator in the Sagar spillway in the state territory. But Chandrababu ordered Adityanath Das, the then Special Chief Secretary of the State Water Resources Department, to come back immediately. Thus, it seems that Chandrababu has pledged allegiance to Telangana in order to avoid the case of crores per vote, even though it is depriving the state of its rights over the Krishna waters.

CM Jagan’s Breakthrough In Water Dispute

After coming to power, YS Jagan has been fighting for the protection of the state’s rights in the case of Krishna waters. Even in the past, he raised the dispute over the transfer of Krishna river water with Telangana. He also complained to the Center that it should intervene immediately to resolve these disputes and stop the illegal projects of the Telangana government. Also, he filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court seeking to restrain Telangana from illegally generating electricity by notifying the scope of the Krishna Board. After that, the AP government was ready to hand over the projects within the state territory in Srisailam and Sagar to the board. Telangana refused. With this, CM YS Jagan directed to take control of the right canal head regulator including the 13 gates of the Nagarjunasagar spillway in the state territory. In this background, the government organized security with 1,311 policemen as there was a tense atmosphere at Nagarjunasagar.
