Amethi confirmed for Rahul Gandhi: UP Congress leader Pradeep Singhal

Congress leader Pradeep Singhal revealed that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will contest from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. He said that Rahul Gandhi will be the party’s candidate from Amethi and the leadership will announce his name soon. Rahul Gandhi represented Amethi in Parliament from 2002 to 2019. In the 2019 general elections, he lost to BJP candidate Smriti Irani. Currently, Rahul is the MP from Wayanad in Kerala.

Amethi has been a Congress stronghold in Uttar Pradesh since the formation of the constituency in 1967. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s youngest son Sanjay Gandhi contested for the first time from Amethi in 1977 and lost due to the emergency. He contested from there in 1980 and won again. After that, Rajiv Gandhi entered politics and contested from Amethi in 1981 and was MP from there in 1984, 1989 and 1991.

In 1999, Sonia Gandhi also contested Amethi and won. However, in 2004 she shifted her constituency to Raebareli, previously represented by Feroze Gandhi and later by Indira Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi won in Amethi for the first time in 2004. He was re-elected in 2009 and 2014. Rahul lost from Amethi in the 2019 elections and won from Wayanad in Kerala, as he contested from two seat that year.
