Centre’s Key Response to Petition Against NEET Irregularities

The National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET)- UG 2024 conducted for admission to MBBS, BDS, and other medical courses is facing heavy criticism across the country. In response, the central government has taken a crucial decision. It informed the Supreme Court that the grace marks given to more than 1500 candidates in the NEET results will be removed. Additionally, these candidates will be given an opportunity to retake the exam.

In the NEET exam conducted for 2024, 1563 students received additional grace marks due to changes in NCERT textbooks and time lost at exam centres. However, due to objections and allegations of irregularities in the NEET examination, the Central Education Department formed a four-member committee last week. This committee investigated and submitted a report on the 1563 students who were awarded grace marks as compensation for lost time.

This year’s NEET entrance exam was held on May 5 at 4,750 centers across the country. About 24 lakh candidates took the exam. Unprecedentedly, 67 students scored 720 out of 720 marks. Suspicions arose when six students from a single examination centre in Haryana achieved the first rank. Recently, students raised concerns that grace marks were the reason behind so many sharing the top rank. Consequently, Alakh Pandey, the Founder and CEO of Physics Wallah (PW) educational institution, filed a petition in the Supreme Court.
