Himachal Pradesh MLAs Take Legal Action Against Disqualification

Six Congress MLAs in Himachal Pradesh were disqualified for cross-voting in the Rajya Sabha elections. The state assembly Speaker, Kuldeep Singh Pathania, removed them from their MLA positions due to party defections. However, the disqualified MLAs have filed a challenge in the High Court against the Speaker’s decision.

During the recent Rajya Sabha elections, six Congress MLAs in Himachal Pradesh, namely Sudhir Sharma, Ravi Thakur, Rajinder Rana, Inder Dutt Lakhanpal, Chetanya Sharma, and Devinder Kumar Bhutto, cross-voted for BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan. However, both the Congress and BJP candidates received an equal number of votes, leading to a tie. Ultimately, the BJP candidate won the toss. As a result of the disqualification of these MLAs, the Congress party’s strength in Himachal Pradesh decreased from 40 to 34 seats, while the opposition BJP now holds 25 seats.
