One Nation, One Election: Seeking Public Input and Committee Insights

The concept of ‘One Nation, One Election’ conducts simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections across the nation emphasizing potential cost reductions. This approach mirrors the simultaneous elections held from India’s independence in 1952 until 1967. A committee, chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, has been constituted to conduct a comprehensive study on this matter.

The committee includes Amit Shah, Ghulam Nabi Azad, NK Singh, Subhash Kashyap, and Sanjay Kothari, with the Law Minister as a special invitee and the Law Secretary serving as the committee’s secretary. Having commenced its work, the committee has already convened twice and is actively seeking opinions by engaging with various communities, political parties, and the Justice Commission.

Recently, the public has been invited to contribute suggestions, with the committee emphasizing that individuals can share their views on the prospect of simultaneous elections for Parliament, States, and Union Territories via the web portal onoe.gov.in or by emailing sc-hlc@gov.in. The committee has set a deadline for receiving public input, urging people to express their opinions before January 15.
