Congress Formation Day to turn boon for Telangana LPG consumers?

Assembly elections in Telangana were held on November 30 and the results were declared on December 3. In this, the Congress party got 64 seats while the BRS was limited to 39 seats. Revanth Reddy was sworn in as the CM on December 7 on behalf of the Congress party after getting the required majority to form the government. Later, the CM conducted reviews in various departments and focused on development works. It is in this context that the Congress party has focused on the promises made during the elections. Already with the implementation of the free bus for women, Aarogyasri increase from Rs 5 lakhs to Rs 10 lakhs and two guarantees out of six guarantees have been covered.

Will it be implemented from the 28th of this month?

It is known that the state government is making arrangements to provide a gas cylinder for Rs 500 under the Mahalakshmi scheme. It is expected to be implemented from the 28th of this month which is the day of the Congress party’s formation. As a part of this, it is reported that the Civil Supplies Department officials are preparing the guidelines rapidly. How many customers are there? Who should apply? What is the burden on the government? These calculations are being made.

Officials are in the process of formulating guidelines

There are 1 crore 20 lakh gas connections in the state. 60 lakh cylinders are being supplied per month. It is known that the implementation of the Mahalakshmi scheme is likely to cost the government more than 3 thousand crores per year. Civil Supplies Officers are busy drafting guidelines for the Rs 500 cylinder scheme. The main debate is whether to take it as a family unit or to give subsidies only to the connections in the name of women. If gas connections are counted only in the name of women, their numbers are around 70 lakhs.

Should a name change option be given?

If the government gives guidelines to give the subsidy only to women, there is a chance of customers queuing up at the LPG dealers to change all the other connections in the name of women as there is a provision for ‘name change’ in the gas connections. This may create a potential loophole in the system leading to unnecessary loss to the exchequer. It has to be seen what the officials’ solution to this problem will be.
