Controversial Land Allocation to High Court, Sparks Protests in Telangana Universities

Allocation of 100 acres of land for the construction of the High Court in Telangana has become controversial. The allocated land includes portions belonging to Professor Jayashankar Agricultural University and Konda Laxman Bapuji Horticultural University. Strong opposition has arisen among students. Over the past three days, university students have engaged in various forms of protest expressing their discontent. Several student union leaders are actively supporting and participating in these protests.

On December 31, the Government of Telangana issued GEO 55, outlining the construction plans for a new High Court. The order allocated 100 acres of land from the Department of Agriculture to the Department of Justice, situated in Premavatipet and Budvel villages of Rajendranagar mandal in Rangareddy district. Approximately 57.50 acres of this land belong to the aforementioned universities, leading to concerns about the potential adverse impact on their resources and facilities. The decision to take away land from a reputed agricultural university has sparked criticism among intellectuals.

University students are expressing frustration with the new Congress government, accusing it of detrimentally affecting the university instead of contributing positively. Their demand is for the government to retract the land allotment to the High Court. As part of their three-day movement, students organized a candlelight display on Wednesday night, where they collectively protested by lighting candles at a university square. Slogans were raised, emphasizing the call for the government to reverse its decision. The students, backed by various student unions, assert that their agitation will persist until the government reconsiders, warning of an escalation in the movement in the future.
