Controversy Arises as Telangana’s Free Bus Scheme for Women Faces Legal Challenge

Telangana government has provided free bus travel facility for women as part of Mahalakshmi scheme. A petition was filed in the High Court on the free RTC bus travel scheme for women in Telangana. A private worker from Nagol submitted the petition. The petition stated that providing free travel only to women in buses comes under discrimination. The petitioner also mentioned that the state government does not have the authority to take a decision on the free scheme in the RTC established by central laws.

They added that the free travel scheme for women has increased the number of passengers unnecessarily. They said that due to this free scheme, those who really require to travel are facing troubles. Citing this reason, the petitioner requested that the Telangana government should suspend G.O. 47, which was issued last month. In this context, they asked the court to stop the free RTC bus scheme for women.
