From virtual assistants and automated customer service agents to news anchors and virtual teachers, artificial intelligence technology is accomplishing amazing things. In this context, Steve Endacott, chairman of AI company Neural Voice, ran for a seat in the UK Parliament with a twist: his campaign was fronted by an AI avatar named ‘AI Steve’. Using an AI avatar created with his photo, he submitted his nomination under the name ‘AI Steve’ and entered the election race. This virtual candidate represented Endacott and participated in the campaign. Although AI Steve made history as the first virtual candidate to contest in the UK elections, he failed to impress the voters. Despite a 70% voter turnout in Brighton Pavilion, he managed to get only 179 (0.3%) votes. Sian Berry of the Green Party won there. If AI Steve had won this election, Steve Endacott would have taken charge as a member of Parliament instead of the virtual candidate. It is known that the Labour Party won this election in the UK.
