Diplomatic Tensions with India Impact Maldives: Tourist Numbers Drop Significantly

Diplomatic tensions between India and Maldives have led to a drop in India’s ranking to fifth place in Maldives tourism. Recent data from the Maldives Tourism Department reveals that India, which held the top position in December 2023, has now slipped to fifth place. As of January 28, 2024, India’s share in Maldives tourism stands at 8 percent, with China leading at 9.5 percent and the UK at 8.1 percent. The top four countries sending the most tourists to Maldives in January are Russia, Italy, China, and the UK.

Decline in India’s tourism ranking is attributed to comments made by three Maldivian ministers during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep, causing diplomatic strains between the two nations. Previously expected to be the largest tourism market for Maldives in 2023, India’s position has seen a significant drop in just one month. The newly elected Maldivian President, Mohamed Muizzu, is perceived as pro-China, leading to increased Chinese tourism. The opposition party in Maldives is reportedly preparing a no-confidence motion against President.
