Remembering Jagadish Chandra Bose On His Death Anniversary

Today is the death anniversary of Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose, a renowned scientist who made significant contributions to botany as well as the fields of radio and microwave optics. He was born on 30 November 1858 in Mymensingh (now in Bangladesh) and died on 23 November 1937. He is known as a pioneer in radio technology. In 1904, he was the first scientist to receive a US patent from India.

Born in the province of Bengal, Bose graduated from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. Later he went to London for medical education. However, due to health issues, he could not continue his studies. He returned to India and continued his research as a physics teacher at Presidency College, Kolkata.

Jagadish Chandra Bose made great strides in wireless signalling research. Bose was the first to use semiconductor junctions to detect radio signals. He made some amazing discoveries in plant physics. He researched how plants react to different conditions using the Crescograph, a device he designed. Using this he made pathbreaking discoveries that drew parallels between tissues of animals and plants.
