Formation of Election Commission of India

The Election Commission of India is a permanent constitutional body. On 25 January 1950, the Election Commission was constituted in accordance with the Constitution. The ECI was formed to conduct elections in the country. The Constitution has given ECI the responsibility and authority to conduct free and fair elections across the country.

Bharat Ratna to Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India on 25 January 1950. For 45 years this charity served the poor, sick and orphans. For this, she received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, in 1980.

State Formation Day of Himachal Pradesh

In 1948, Himachal Pradesh was formed an administrative unit combining 30 princely states. It became the 18th state of India on 25 January 1971. The state’s capital is Shimla. Dharamshala, Kangra, Mandi, Kullu, Chamba, Dalhousie and Manali are other important towns.

National Voters’ Day

National Voter’s Day is celebrated across the country every year since 2011 on 25 January, commemorating the foundation day of the Election Commission of India. On this day, the Election Commission organizes some special programs to make people and students aware of the right to vote and the system of public ownership.

Birthday of actress Urvashi

Today is the birthday of Kavita Ranjini, popularly known as ‘Urvashi’ in Indian cinema. She acted in Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu films. She won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 2005 film ‘Achuvinte Amma’. She has acted in Telugu films like Sandade Sandadi, Allari Ramudu, Adavallaku Matrame etc.

  • NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover, also known as Opportunity, landed on Mars on January 25, 2005. It explored Mars’s surface and operated until 2018.
  • In 2011, the Egyptian Revolution began against increasing police brutality in the country.
  • On January 25, 2005, Miss Colombia Paulina Vega was crowned Miss Universe 2014.
