Nelson Mandela’s Release from Prison

On this day in 1980, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 435, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners in South Africa. The resolution also condemned South Africa’s apartheid and called for an end to all forms of assistance to the country.

EMS Namboodiripad is Born

EMS Namboodiripad, the first Chief Minister of Kerala between 1957-59 and again between 1967-70, was born in 1909 in the Malappuram District of Kerala, India. He was also the first non-Congress Chief Minister and the first Communist Chief Minister of any Indian state.

GV Prakash Kumar, a prominent Indian music composer and playback singer, was born in Chennai, in 1987. He has composed music for several Tamil and Telugu films and has won numerous awards, including one National Film Award and three Filmfare Awards South.

South Korean Diplomat Ban Ki-moon is Born

Ban Ki-moon, a South Korean diplomat and politician, was born in Gyeongju, South Korea, in 1944. He served as the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations from 2007 to 2016.
