World Desertification and Drought Day is observed today. This day was first organized in 1995 to combat desertification and drought. In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 17 as the Day Against Desertification and Drought.

Jhansi Lakshmibai

Jhansi Lakshmibai, a prominent Indian freedom fighter, met a heroic death in Gwalior in 1858. She ruled as the queen of Jhansi, a kingdom in North India. She became a symbol of resistance against British rule in 1857. In the annals of Indian history, she stands akin to ‘Joan of Arc’.
