Today Is Guru Nanak Jayanti: Sikhism

Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated every year on the full moon day of Karthika Masam. This year it will be celebrated on 27th November i.e. Monday. Sikhs all over the world celebrate his birth anniversary. Guru Nanak Jayanti is also known as Guru Purab and Prakash Parv. On this occasion, all the Sikhs in the country and abroad perform kirtans and various programs related to the Guru.

Founder of Sikhism

Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first of the 10 Sikh Gurus, was born on 15 April 1469 in Talwandi, Punjab. His parents were Kalyan Chand Das Bedi, also known as Kalyan Das Mehta and Mata Tripta. Guru Nanak acquired great knowledge about Hinduism and Islam. It was with this knowledge that he founded Sikhism in the 15th century. The teachings of Guru Nanak Dev are preserved in the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikh people.

Guru Nanak Jayanti Celebrations

Celebrations begin two days before Guru Nanak’s birth anniversary in all gurdwaras across the globe. Guru Granth Sahib is recited continuously for 48 hours in Gurudwaras. After that, Nagar Kirtan is performed with one day to go for the festival. It is known as Panj Pyare. For Sikhs, the triangular flag, the Nishan Sahib, is placed on the palanquin of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of Sikhism, during Nagarkirtan. After that, a grand procession is held.
