Union Minister Bhupender Yadav’s Announcement.. Red Sandalwood Removed From Review Process

Red sandalwood is in high demand in the international market. Many movies show the value of red sandalwood, and everyone knows the recent film ‘Pushpa’ in which the hero smuggles red sandalwood as it has high demand. Apart from the movie, cultivation of the highly prized red sandalwood is still illegal due to being on the banned list. However, the central government has removed restrictions on red sandalwood cultivation and exports. Union Minister Bhupender Yadav made a statement to this effect.

Removal From Complex Process

Bhupender Yadav said that the government has removed red sandalwood cultivation from the complex commercial process. He said that it can be cultivated and exported; this decision was taken at the convention held in Geneva, Switzerland, recently. Since 2004, the red sandalwood available in India has been under review due to the complex trade process, and a ban has been imposed on its cultivation and exports. The Union Minister expressed hope that by removing the complicated trade process, the farmers will be encouraged to cultivate red sandalwood.

Red sandalwood is mainly found in the Seshachalam forest region of Rayalaseema, Andhra Pradesh. , Velugonda, Palakonda, Seshachalam, and Nallamala forests are in the districts of Chittoor, Nellore, Kadapa and Kurnool. They are spread up to the Eastern Ghats. Red Sandalwood grows mainly in Seshachalam and Velugonda. The red sandalwood grown here has good colour and quality, along with medicinal properties.
