ICC Implements New Rule: Stop-Clock Rule To Save Time

Keeping in view the popularity of T20 cricket, ICC is taking steps towards increasing the speed in these formats. The new rule ‘stopping clock’ in this format will come into effect from December 12. As part of this, it will be introduced in the 5-match T20 series between England and West Indies starting tomorrow. The ICC has recently revealed that this provision will be in effect until April next year on an experimental basis. Later, it will be implemented in men’s ODI and T20 formats.

What Is the Stop-Clock Rule?

A lot of time is wasted between overs in T20 cricket. With this, ICC has taken a pivotal decision to increase the speed in these formats. According to the stop clock rule, only 60 seconds have been fixed as gap time for the bowling team between overs. So, the bowling team should be ready to bowl the first ball of their next over within 60 seconds of the completion of the previous over. If this period is exceeded twice, a penalty of 5 runs will be imposed on the bowling team for the third time. Meanwhile, to increase the speed of the game, it is reported that the ICC has decided to implement the ‘stop clock’ rule in the board meeting held in Ahmedabad on November 21.
