TEAM INDIA Wore Black Armbands! Do You Know Why?

In their World Cup match against England, Team India entered the ring wearing black ribbons on their jerseys. Seeing the black armbands on the hands of the players, fans were confused as to why they were wearing them. The players wore these as a tribute to the legendary Indian spin wizard, Bishan Singh Bedi, who passed away on the 23rd of this month. BCCI has disclosed the same through its social media account.

Born in 1946 in the famous city of Amritsar in Punjab, Bishan Singh Bedi took 266 wickets in his test career. Being a left-arm spinner with his signature flight being his main weapon, Bedi took 5 wickets 14 times. He took 64 wickets in the 1974-75 Ranji season. Bedi used to trouble the opponents with his elegant bowling style. In 1969, Bishansingh Bedi’s career-best performance came in a Test match held at Kolkata. He recorded figures of 7/98 in that match against Australia.

He took 10 wickets (10/194) in a Test match against Australia at Perth in 1977-78. Bedi succeeded Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi as India’s captain. In 1976, the Bishan Singh Bedi-led team recorded its first victory in ODIs in a series against the West Indies.

Bishan Singh Bedi played his last ODI against Sri Lanka on June 16, 1979. He played the last Test match against England on August 30 of the same year and said goodbye to his cricketing career. He is the one who trained spinners like Maninder Singh, Sunil Joshi and Murali Karthik. He also acted as a selector for the Indian national team. After Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s retirement, he captained the Indian team for four years from 1975 to 1979.
