Aqua University in Andhra Pradesh: A Dream Fulfilled

A long-cherished dream has finally come to fruition with the establishment of the Aqua University in Andhra Pradesh at Narasapuram in West Godavari district. In response to the shortage of human resources in aquaculture, the AP government has introduced Aqua university, catering to Fisheries Polytechnic Diploma holders, Bachelor of Fisheries Science degree holders, and Master of Fisheries Science PG and Degree holders, aiming for the sustainable development of aquaculture. This marks the third Aqua University in the country after Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Rapid construction progress is underway for the new building complex, and an additional fisheries college has been established.

Andhra Pradesh takes the lead nationally, with approximately 1.75 lakh aqua farmers, 8.50 lakh fishermen, and around 16.50 lakh people deriving their livelihoods from fisheries in the state. The Aqua University, instituted for higher education and employment opportunities, has greatly benefited fishermen and aquaculture farmers. Presently, Andhra Pradesh ranks first in the country with a production of 51.06 lakh tonnes of fish and prawns, contributing 25.60 percent to the national fish production and 78 percent to shrimp production.

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Jagan, the AP Fisheries University Act-2020 was enacted, leading to the establishment of Aqua University affiliated separately to Veterinary University. The university officially commenced operations on February 19, 2022. The newly sanctioned Narsapuram Aqua College, with 60 BFSC seats, is now attached to the university. Classes have commenced in the Tufan building in Narsapuram from the academic year 2022-23, with the notable achievement of filling all 60 seats in the first year and obtaining recognition from UGC and ICAR.
