BC Caste Census in AP: Jagan Government’s Decision To Address BCs Miseries

The government has decided to get clarity on the caste-wise population of BCs in the state. What is the actual population of the state? How many people belong to each caste? The YSRCP government has paid special attention to these issues. As a part of this, the AP government is preparing to conduct a caste survey. While the census of BCs has already been conducted in Bihar, other states like Punjab and Odisha are also conducting the census. Now the census of BCs will be conducted in AP as well.

It is against this backdrop that Minister Chelluboina Venugopala Krishna made a statement. The minister said that the caste census will be conducted from November 15 onwards. It has been announced that the services of village secretariats and volunteers will be utilized for the census of 139 communities in the BC category. In this regard, he said that suggestions and advice will be accepted from various BC associations and this program will be completed within a period of 6 months.

Village secretariat employees will go to the houses in their respective areas and collect the details of the BCs. 10 percent of the information gathered under each Secretariat will be reverified by the superiors once again. For this, Revenue Inspector level employees have been assigned these responsibilities. This will give clarity on the BC population in terms of different social groups. The government will make a mobile app available for storing the data collected in this process. For this, the government is already working on creating an app.

OBCs constitute more than 52 percent of India’s population. But if the exact calculations are done, it is expected that the BCs may get better reservation and cash benefits on the basis of population percentage. In the background of the announcement that the AP government will take up the BC census, many BC communities expressed joy. They thanked CM Jagan and the Minister for taking this decision.

Earlier during Assembly sessions, when Minister Venugopala Krishna introduced the Bill on the BC caste survey, the House passed it and sent it to the Centre. During the debate on the bill, CM Jagan said that due to the caste census of BCs, they may benefit in terms of economic, social, political, professional, employment, and education. He added that they may also get increased reservations. CM Jagan is now keeping his word by carrying on with this latest survey.
