Oil production from Krishna Godavari Basin: A boon to the economy

The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation has started crude oil production as part of a deepwater project in the Krishna Godavari basin, 35 km from Andhra Pradesh’s territorial waters. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri revealed that oil production has taken place for the first time in the KGWS 98/2 block in the Krishna River basin. Meanwhile, in the Bay of Bengal Delta part of the Krishna Godavari Basin Project, where oil is currently being produced, they said that the project was started in 2016-17, but was delayed due to Covid.

A Total of 26 Wells

While there are 26 wells, 4 of them are in use. ONGC said that 45 thousand barrels of crude oil are produced from the block every day. At present it is providing 7 percent of the national oil production and 7 percent of the national natural gas production. It has been divided into three clusters. Now, oil production has started in Cluster 2. The Union Minister announced that the construction of Cluster 3 will be completed by June 2024.

Prime Minister Modi’s Praise

The crude oil will be sent to Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited, an affiliate of ONGC. There the quality of crude oil is checked and grading is decided. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed happiness over the production of crude oil in the Krishna Godavari basin. He said that it is a crucial step forward for India. It will benefit the country’s economy. He said that the country is moving forward as a fast-developing economy.
