Congress Government to Collapse in Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh Congress Party received an unexpected shock. In yesterday’s Rajya Sabha elections, six MLAs from the party engaged in cross-voting. They voted for the BJP candidate. As a result, the strength of Congress in the Himachal Assembly has fallen to a minority. In this context, the opposition BJP is reported to meet the Governor today. The BJP leaders are expected to request the Governor, given the reduced strength of Congress in the Assembly, to give them a chance to form the government. It has become a matter of interest what decision Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla will make.

The Himachal Pradesh Assembly has a total of 68 members, with Congress having 40 members, BJP 25, and three independents. In the recent Rajya Sabha elections, six Congress MLAs along with the three independents voted for the BJP candidate, boosting the party’s strength to 34. With the loss of six members, Congress’s strength dropped to 34. Political analysts believe that it won’t be a significant challenge for the BJP to secure the support of the one member needed to form the government. Efforts by the BJP to garner that one member’s support have already begun. In this context, there are reports that a BJP government might be formed in Himachal Pradesh within the next two or three days.
