Legal Battle: Supreme Court Petition Challenges Citizenship Law

A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) brought by the Central Government. The petition, filed by the Indian Union Muslim League from Kerala, seeks a stay on the implementation of the Act, claiming that the CAA grants citizenship only to individuals from specific religions. The petition argues that this fundamentally contradicts the Constitution.

It has become a matter of interest whether the Supreme Court will accept the petition for a hearing against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) introduced by the Central Government. If the Supreme Court decides to hear the case, it will be intriguing to see the outcome. Before the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP government at the center implemented the Citizenship Amendment Act – 2019 (CAA), for which the Ministry of Home Affairs released a gazette. Subsequently, the CAA was enforced across the country. This act clears the path for granting citizenship to non-Muslim refugees who fled to India before December 31, 2014, due to religious persecution from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
