Pakistan: Shehbaz Sharif Elected Prime Minister, Coalition Government Formed

Shehbaz Sharif secures second term as Pakistan’s Prime Minister. He will lead a coalition government with the Pakistan Peoples Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz. Shehbaz won the vote in the National Assembly with 201 out of 336 total members, defeating his opponent, former Prime Minister Omar Ayub Khan of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, who received only 92 votes.

Amidst chaos and protests from PTI supporters, Shehbaz Sharif emerged as the newly elected Prime Minister. He is set to take the oath of office on March 4 at the President’s Palace, Ivan-e-Sadar. This marks his second term as Prime Minister, having previously served in a coalition government from April 2022 to August 2023.

In the February elections, Imran Khan’s party secured 93 seats, while Nawaz Sharif’s party won 75 seats and Bhutto’s party secured 54 seats. Additionally, the MQM-P won 17 seats. Sharif, Bhutto’s party, and other independents have agreed to form a coalition government. As per their agreement, if Shehbaz Sharif becomes Prime Minister again, Asif Ali Zardari, the father of Bilawal Bhutto, will be the PPP’s candidate for the presidency. Zardari previously served as the president from 2008 to 2013.
