It’s National Farmers Day today: Do you know how it came to be?

National Farmers Day (Kisan Divas) is celebrated on December 23 every year across the country. This day is celebrated on the occasion of the birthday of Chaudhary Charan Singh, the 5th Prime Minister of India.

The Zamindari Act was repealed and the Kavaludaari Act came into force due to the many movements of Chaudhary Charan Singh for the peasants. Farmers were given loan facilities from banks. The Government of India declared National Farmers Day on his birthday for his services to farmers and the agriculture sector. On this occasion, programs like conferences, training camps, awareness programs and exhibitions will be organized for farmers about the agricultural sector. In recognition of him, postal bills were released on 29 May 1990 on Charan Singh’s death anniversary.
