Formation of Indian Science Congress (7 January 1914)

During the British rule in India, they organized the first ‘Indian Science Congress’ in Calcutta in 1914 on this day. It is now organized by the Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA). It was established to promote science and technology in India. Since the inception of this institution, the ‘Indian Science Congress’ meetings have been held every year in the country.

Golden Globe Awards

The ‘Golden Globes’ are considered to be the most prestigious awards after the Academy Awards in the film industry. They started in 1943 on this day. It was a bunch of journalists who came together to organize these awards to be given to the film and TV industries together. The organization was formed under the name of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). It is known that recently the Indian film ‘RRR’ won the ‘Golden Globe’ for the ‘Naatu Naatu’ song.

Huge victory for Congress (7 January 1980)

It is today that the Congress party, under the leadership of PM Indira Gandhi, won the general election in 1980. Indira Gandhi created history by winning 353 MP seats. She once again ascended the throne of Prime Minister and became famous as an unstoppable woman.

First US Presidential Election (January 7, 1789)

The first Presidential elections were held in the United States of America on this day. The election process started on 15 December 1788 and ended on 7 January 1789. In this election, George Washington was elected the President unanimously. The capital city of America, Washington, DC, was named after him. There is also a state called Washington in the country.

Birthday of Shantha Sinha (7th January 1950)

Children’s Rights activist Shantha Sinha was born today. Shantha Sinha from Nellore, AP, undertook a movement for children’s rights. In the name of her grandfather Venkata Rangaiah, she is doing relief programs through ‘MV Foundation’. She was awarded the Padma Shri and Ramon Magsaysay Award.

  • One of the greatest Indian actors Irrfan Khan’s birth anniversary (1967) is today. Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu, popular singer and SPB’s son SP Charan also celebrate their birthdays today.
  • Indian cricketer Kapil Dev took his 300th Test wicket today (1987). Kapil Dev made history by taking 300 Test wickets at the age of 28.
  • Death of Pramod Karan Sethi, creator of the artificial foot, the ‘Jaipur Foot’ (2008). Today, ‘Jaipur Foot’ is doing a lot of good for those who have lost their legs.
  • The typewriter was invented by Henry Mill of England (1714) today.
  • Sheikh Hasina won as Prime Minister of Bangladesh in 2014 today.
  • Today is the birthday of Lewis Hamilton, who is taking the world by storm as a Formula One race car driver. Born in 1985, racing has been his life since childhood. Hamilton, who was participating in races at the age of 12, became a professional racer at the age of 22. He is proving that he is unstoppable by becoming a World Champion multiple times in the F1 Driver’s Championship.
  • It is today in 1953 that US President Harry Truman announced they were developing a hydrogen bomb.
