Auto Driver’s Daughter Shines with 5 Wickets for Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Spinner Shobana Asha’s magic with 5 wickets helped Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) secure a win while defending a low target in the WPL. In the match held on their home ground on Saturday, RCB defeated UP Warriors by a margin of 2 runs. The match turned in favour of RCB in the 17th over when three wickets were taken. Shobhana gave away only 22 runs in her four-over spell, taking 5 wickets. With this performance, netizens are now curious to know who she is.

Sobhana Asha comes from an ordinary family. Her father is an auto-rickshaw driver in Kerala. Hailing from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, Shobhana was inspired to pursue professional cricket after watching former bowler Neetu David play international cricket on Doordarshan. She developed an interest in cricket while studying at Cotton Hill Girls’ Higher Secondary School.

Coming from an ordinary family and choosing cricket as her career, she faced many challenges. However, she never lost her interest in cricket. While still in school, Asha would play in district-level cricket tournaments without informing her parents. At the young age of 14, she played for the Kerala state team at the senior level.

Shane Warne’s coach, Terry Jenner, recognized her talent at the MAC Spin Foundation when she was 15 years old. By the age of 19, Asha Shobhana played as a senior women’s T20 challenger for Kerala. Her career advanced further in the 2011-12 season, where she took 10 wickets and scored two half-centuries in five matches, securing her place in the Royal Challengers Bangalore team in the WPL.
