MUMBAI: The re-entry of cricket into the prestigious Olympic games has been finally approved. The hopes of cricket fans who are waiting to see the gentleman’s game in the Olympics are going to be fulfilled in the next five years. The International Olympic Committee has approved cricket as a part of the 2028 Olympics to be held in Los Angeles.

Along with cricket, softball, flag football, lacrosse and squash are also going to be included in the Olympics, the IOC executive board said. To this extent, in the IOC sessions which started in Mumbai, this proposal was put before the members and voting took place. In this voting, the proposal of cricket’s entry into the Olympics from 2028 was approved.

With that, the men’s and women’s cricket teams will now have a chance to compete in the T20 format at the Los Angeles Olympics. Team India, which has been limited to tournaments like World Cup, Champions Trophy and Asia Cup, will now compete in the Olympics as well.

By including cricket in the Olympics, the International Olympics Committee also hopes to earn huge revenues from broadcasting rights in India. While the 2024 Paris Olympics broadcast rights stood at Rs. 158.6 crores, it is estimated that by 2028 the broadcast rights will reach Rs. 1,525 crores if cricket is included. It is estimated that IOC will get about 15 thousand crores through broadcasting rights alone.
