To permanently solve this issue, the state government is setting up a system to issue vehicle fitness certificates through an automated method. For this purpose, the state is setting up 26 Automated Testing Centres in all district headquarters. These centres are going to be set up as per the standards of the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) in Pune. The effort is to make these automated testing centres operational within a year.

As part of setting up ATC centers, Visakhapatnam has been chosen for a pilot project, and a centre is being established there. The construction of the Automated Testing Center, estimated at Rs. 18.50 crore, is nearing its final stages of completion. The Transport Department has initiated the tender process for constructing these centres in the remaining 25 district centres across the state. In the first phase, ATC centres will be constructed in 15 districts. Initially, bids for constructing ATC centres will soon be finalized in the district centres of Srikakulam, Anakapalli, Kakinada, Rajamahendravaram, Bhimavaram, Machilipatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur, Narasaraopeta, Ongole, Nellore, Tirupati, Kadapa, Kurnool, and Anantapur. The government plans to complete the tender process for constructing ATCs in the remaining district centres by the first week of February.

The Automated Testing Centers in each district of the state will be set up within a 30-kilometer radius of the district headquarters. Each centre will be allocated a space of 3,000 square yards. These centres will be equipped with modern sensors and computer labs, along with specially designed driving tracks. Some of these tracks will be designated for light vehicles, while others will be specifically for heavy vehicles. Vehicles arriving for fitness checks will be tested on these tracks, with sensors evaluating their fitness condition. The centres will assess the brake performance, engine condition, and other potential issues in vehicles, issuing relevant certificates based on these evaluations. In this system, one can get a vehicle fitness certificate without any scope for deficiencies. This initiative will make the government’s efforts to prevent road accidents more effective and efficient.
