Imran Khan Receives Another Setback: Sentenced to 14 Years in Jail in New Case

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan is facing serious troubles. He got jailed in the Toshakhana case, where he and his wife Bushra Bibi were given a 14-year prison sentence, as reported by Pakistani media. Imran was also sentenced to ten years in prison in the Cipher case, related to the misuse of official secret documents. In total, he faces 14 years in jail, along with disqualification from contesting elections for another ten years in the Toshakhana case. The court ordered them to pay a fine of Rs 1.5 billion.

Imran Khan received 58 expensive gifts from foreign countries during his term as Prime Minister, which should have been deposited in the Toshakhana treasury. Instead, he is accused of buying some, like Rolex watches, at a fraction of their value. Toshakhana operates under the supervision of the Cabinet Division of the Government of Pakistan, where gifts to political leaders and officials are kept. According to the law, if the value of the prizes is less than Rs 30,000, the President or Prime Minister can keep them; otherwise, they should be deposited in Toshakhana.

During Imran’s tenure as PM, he purchased a Rs 38 lakh Rolex watch by paying only Rs 7.54 lakh and another Rolex watch worth Rs 15 lakhs by paying only Rs 2.94 lakhs. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif alleged that less than a third of these were built and then sold in Dubai. A five-member committee, headed by the Chief Election Commissioner, conducted an inquiry into the matter.

During the investigation, Imran informed the Election Commission of Pakistan that he bought the gifts for a total of Rs 2 crore 15 lakh 60 thousand from Toshakhana. It was revealed that if they were sold, they would fetch Rs 5 crores and 80 lakhs. However, the details of this income were not shown in the income tax returns, leading to the disqualification of Imran Khan by the Election Commission. In the earlier case, the District and Sessions Court in Islamabad sentenced Imran to three years in prison and imposed a fine on August 5, but the judgment was later suspended. Now, the Pakistani court has sentenced him to 14 years in prison.
