MS Swaminathan: The Father of the Green Revolution, Passes Away… Celebrities Pay Their Respects
India’s Green Revolution pioneer and renowned agronomist, MS Swaminathan, has passed away at the age of 98. He breathed his last while under medical care at a hospital in Chennai due to his declining health. Swaminathan made significant contributions to the development of high-yielding paddy varieties, and his tireless efforts were instrumental in enabling even low-income farmers to achieve increased crop yields.
Swaminathan was recognized for his outstanding contributions to agriculture with prestigious awards from the Government of India, including the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan. His global impact was further acknowledged when he became the inaugural recipient of the World Food Prize in 1987. Additionally, he received numerous international accolades, including the HK Ferodia Award, the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award, and the Indira Gandhi Prize. Swaminathan’s remarkable achievements also earned him the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1971 and the Albert Einstein World Science Award in 1986.
Telangana Chief Minister KCR expressed his heartfelt condolences on the passing of MS Swaminathan. He emphasized that Swaminathan’s demise marks a significant loss for the agricultural sector in the country. KCR noted that Swaminathan’s visionary approach recognized the interdependence of the majority of the population’s livelihood and cultural way of life with the agricultural sector. Swaminathan’s tireless efforts brought about transformative changes in the traditional methods of domestic agriculture, ultimately contributing to India’s self-sufficiency in food production.
In addition to Chief Minister KCR, prominent film actors and politicians have also extended their condolences on the demise of Swaminathan.
