IIT Palakkad Scientists’ Breakthrough in Utilizing Human Urine for Electricity Generation
There is a high demand for electricity in the world. We see electricity being generated using water, coal, and solar energy. Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Palakkad have conducted an innovative experiment. They discovered a new method to produce electricity and natural fertilizers using human urine. By introducing human urine into an electrochemical resource recovery reactor and subjecting it to electrochemical reactions, they experimentally demonstrated that producing electricity and biofertilizers is possible.

This innovative technology utilizes the ionic strength in urine to facilitate electrochemical reactions that generate electricity. Similarly, it utilizes nitrogen, phosphorus, and magnesium to produce biofertilizers. This integrated technology includes an electrochemical reactor, ammonia adsorption column, decolourization, chlorination chamber, plumbing, and electrical manifolds. Urine is fed into the ERRR (Electrochemical Resource Recovery Reactor) to stimulate electrochemical reactions that simultaneously produce electricity and biofertilizers. As a result, electricity and biofertilizers are produced. Scientists say that these fertilizers contain nutrients essential for plants.
