Bumrah’s new record in Newlands Test as India Drub South Africa

Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who returned to Test cricket after a gap of almost 18 months, showed his class. He took 12 wickets in the two-Test series against South Africa. He stood as the highest wicket-taker in this series. Bumrah, who had taken four wickets in the Centurion Test, now took 8 wickets in the Cape Town Test. With that, Bumrah became the ‘Player of the Series’ sharing it with South Africa’s outgoing Captain Dean Elgar. With that, Bumrah became the first Indian cricketer to win a Man of the Series award in a Test series in South Africa. Even cricket legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli could not achieve this feat.

Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj created a rare record on South African soil. This is the first time that two Indian pacers have taken six or more wickets in two innings in a Test match in South Africa. This is only the second time overall that this has happened for India in Tests. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (6/82 in the first innings) and Ishant Sharma (7/74 in the second innings) were the first Indians to achieve this feat, in the 2014 Test against England at Lord’s.

The Cape Town victory was only the 5th Test win for India on South African soil. Two wins in Johannesburg, one each in Durban, Centurion and Cape Town make up those five wins. The overall record for India in South Africa is dismal. While India played a total of 25 Tests in the Rainbow Nation they won 5, lost 13 and drew 7. Most notably, India has not won a single Test series on South African soil so far.
