“Cannot Restrict Coaching Centers”- Supreme court

The Supreme Court made important comments on student suicides. Supreme Court responded that intense competition and pressure from parents are the main reasons for suicides among students preparing for competitive exams. Supreme Court has taken up a petition filed on the issue of restricting private coaching centres and student suicides. It said that orders cannot be issued to control coaching centres.

The Supreme Court opined that the pressure of the parents of the students is the reason behind suicides. Justice Sanjeev Khanna and Justice SVN Bhatti said that courts can’t give orders in these kinds of cases. A doctor named Aniruddha Narayan Malpani from Mumbai approached the Supreme Court seeking to control the private coaching centres across the country that give training for competitive exams like IIT-JEE and NEET. Advocate Mohini Priya argued on his behalf. The NCRB-2020 report that about 8.2 per cent of students commit suicide in the country was brought to the attention of the court.
