Indian govt makes key pivot in relation with Maldives, decides to increase exports

India has made a crucial decision regarding the export of food products to foreign countries. The Government of India has granted permission for the export of eggs, potatoes, onions, rice, wheat flour, sugar, and pulses to Maldives. Significant progress has been observed in trade relations between India and Maldives. Additionally, the decision has been made to export construction materials as well. This decision aligns with the Bilateral Trade Agreement between the two nations, allowing for the export of gravel, sand, and stone for the fiscal year 2024-25, as per the request of the Maldivian Government.

In response to a request from the Maldivian government, India has approved increased export quotas for essential goods required by Maldives. The quotas for various commodities have been substantially raised for the fiscal year 2024–25, thereby enhancing the long-term trade relations between the two countries.

The Government of India has authorized the export of 42 crore 75 lakh 36 thousand 904 eggs, 21 thousand 513 tons of potatoes, 35 thousand 749 tons of onions, 1 lakh 24 thousand 218 tons of rice, 1 lakh 9 thousand 162 tons of wheat flour, 64 thousand 494 tons of sugar, and 224 tons of pulses to Maldives. Limits have been set for these exports.

A notification issued by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, has outlined the items permitted for export to the Republic of Maldives in the fiscal year 2024-25. The quantities of eggs, potatoes, onions, rice, wheat flour, sugar, pulses, stone gravel, and sand to be exported to the Maldives have been detailed in a notification published in the Gazette of India Extraordinary.
