Trailblazing Transgender Candidate Challenges PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is contesting the Lok Sabha elections from the Varanasi constituency. The contest has become more interesting with a transgender candidate also running against him from the same constituency. Hemangi Sakhi Maa, belonging to the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha (ABHM), has entered the fray. Born in Baroda, Gujarat, she is known to be the world’s first transgender person to teach the Bhagavad Gita.

The Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha (ABHM) is set to contest 20 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, fielding Hemangi Sakhi against Modi. The polling in Varanasi is scheduled for June 1st as part of the first phase of elections. Furthermore, Ajay Rai, the state president of UP, will once again be contesting as the Congress candidate in this constituency.

In 2019, she was consecrated as Acharya Mahamandaleshwar. Her family moved to Mumbai due to her father’s occupation as a film distributor. As a renowned spiritual figure, her entry into the electoral fray, embracing Hindutva as her breath, sparks debate on how challenging it could be for the BJP, which has been advancing with Hindutva ideology.

So far, in both elections, Narendra Modi’s main competitors were either AAP or SP, moving forward with a secular ideology, making Hindutva a unique stance of BJP. Now, with the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha fielding a candidate against the BJP, especially someone like Hemangi Sakhi Maa, it has become a point of keen discussion for everyone.
